Caryophyllaceae (Pink) |
The Caryophyllaceae contains 91 genera with ca. 2,500 species. The family is distributed worldwide, but most diverse in the Mediterranean. Many species are found in temperate or alpine habitats; one species reaches Antarctica. The majority are annual, biennial, or perennial herbs, but few species are small trees, shrubs, or vines. The stems erect or prostrate, often with swollen nodes. The leaves are opposite, whorled, or rarely alternate. The flowers are arranged in terminal or axillary cymes, or solitary; radially symmetric, usually with five petals and five sepals; the petals are entire, fringed or deeply cleft. The fruit is a utricle or a capsule.
